Virginia NeuroCare’s “Paintings and Prose” program, an innovative art gallery and bookstore, was recently profiled in the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development (JRRD). Dr. Don Nidiffer, a behavioral clinical psychologist and Program Manager for Virginia NeuroCare, a partner of The MENTOR Network, contributed to the guest editorial which focuses on the importance of incorporating work and social activities into the recovery process for people with brain injuries. Other experts in the field including L. G. Leake, Tina M. Trudel, and Dorothy Palanza also contributed to the article.
Paintings and Prose operates on the historic downtown pedestrian mall in Charlottesville, Virginia, offering the real-life experiences of running a business and interacting with members of the community to participants in Virginia NeuroCare's Charlottesville program. The purpose of working at Paintings and Prose is to provide a functional means to gain prevocational work skills for people recovering from acquired brain injuries. Program participants strive to progress to more independent functioning, and hopefully, eventually seek employment in the community; or, in the case of military service members, return to duty; or, for National Guard or Reserves members, return to their pre-Active Duty civilian jobs.
The Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development (JRRD), published by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, has been a leading research journal for more than 45 years. Formerly the Bulletin of Prosthetics Research (BPR), JRRD debuted in 1983 to include cross-disciplinary findings in rehabilitation. JRRD, a scientifically indexed journal, publishes original research papers from U.S. and international researchers on all rehabilitation research disciplines.
