The MENTOR Network recognizes the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which has opened doors for millions of Americans to pursue employment, access services and participate equally in community life.
This week we celebrate the 17th anniversary of the Olmstead decision, which requires states to provide community-based supports and residential programs so that individuals with disabilities can experience a fuller range of opportunities and shape the course of their own lives.
Each May, National Foster Care Month highlights the need for every child to have a safe, loving home. It’s a time to reflect on the challenges faced by the more than 400,000 children in foster care and acknowledge the many child welfare professionals, social workers, therapists and individuals in the community working together to help them have a bright future.
DSP of the Week: Kristy Schwittay, REM Wisconsin “A DSP is a great job that allows you to learn how to work with individuals with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities. It’s such a great and rewarding experience! Each and every "client" in my eyes is nothing less than family! We love to go sightseeing together and go to parks. Any place with fishing attire makes one of my clients ecstatic and just to see him smile is a reward in itself. I am very blessed to have the position I do. My heart and passion is dedicated 100% to the care, safety and love for each individual! This isn't a job, it’s a passion.” thementornetwork.com/our-stories/dsp-week/... See MoreSee Less
